Calling All BC High School Students!
Do you have a creative spark and a passion for justice? Now's your chance to showcase your talents AND help teens in BC know their legal rights! To celebrate the relaunch of our website LegalRightsforYouth.ca, we’re launching a Video Contest on the theme:

Why legal rights are important to YOU(th)
Consider how legal rights impact your life and why they matter to you and your community. What are some ways you can use your rights to make a positive difference or protect yourself and others? How does knowing empower you to stand up for yourself and others?
WHAT YOU CAN SUBMIT:
- Video (min 1 minute, max 3 minutes)
- Max one entry per student
WIN PRIZES!
Top 3 videos will receive a $75 gift card. PLUS: Your work could be featured on LegalRightsforYouth.ca and other JES media to educate youth about their rights!
HOW TO ENTER:
- Post your video on YouTube,
- Submit your entry form by May 22, 2025.
GUIDELINES:
- Think of creative ways to get your peers interested in learning more about their rights. What rights are most relevant to your friends?
- Your submission should help young people understand the importance of knowing their rights in a fun or impactful way.
- Videos can be live-action, animated, or narrated slideshows—whatever gets your point across!
ELIGIBILITY
- Open to all BC high school students.
- Maximum one video submission per entrant.
LENGTH and FORMAT:
- Videos should be no less than a minute and no longer than 3 minutes
- Post your video on YouTube, make sure it is publicly viewable.
CONTENT:
- No copyrighted music, foul language, crude content etc…
- All videos must be the original work of the student whose name is listed on the submission form. No professional assistance allowed.
- Using video footage, music, or graphics that exist in the public domain, fall under fair use, or for which you have obtained permission is acceptable.
JUDGING:
- Videos will be judged by the JES Youth Committee and JES employees based on the following criteria
- Originality and creativity
- Effectiveness and clarity of message
- Accuracy of information
- Decisions are final and not appealable.
PRIZES:
- 3 winners will be selected and will receive $75 gift card
WINNERS:
- Winners must, upon request by JES, provide the original file of the video.
- Winners will be solely responsible for any federal, provincial, or local taxes on winnings.
OWNERSHIP and USE:
- The ownership of any submission remains the property of the filmmaker, but entry into the competition constitutes the entrant’s permission and consent, without compensation, with or without attribution, for the Justice Education Society to use, reproduce, transmit, post, distribute, adapt, edit, and/or display the submission.
- JES intends to use the videos on LegalRightsforYouth.ca and JES social media.
